The “Nature” of Nature: Analyzing Natural Disasters from a Metaphysical Perspective

This article explores the sensitive topic of natural disasters from a multi-dimensional viewpoint that can provide us with some holistic perspective.

The panoramic beauty of nature, with its awe-inspiring scenery and breathtaking landscapes, instigates a veteran to introspect and dig deep within the secret chambers of one’s own conscience. . . But hold on! Change your ways before the magma oozes out of its crevices. . .

The theme under our discussion is the logical correlation between the rampant uprise of irreligion and the concomitant natural upheavals.

  1. 1 The Contrast from the Past

Considering the version of the scriptural texts, as far as the concept of performance of sacrifice is concerned, the Universal Administration provides us with the most vital things needed for our sustenance like air, water, grains, etc. In order for them to continue supplying us with these necessities, they need to receive their share of the sacrificial oblations performed by the expert priests. But when there is a discrepancy in such sacrificial performance, they withdraw their resources, leading to an uprise of deplorable phenomena like drought, famine, etc. in the face of the planet.

But in today’s day and age when people careless to be duty-bound and spirit of sacrifice is a rare virtue, the times are replete with mass destruction caused by some natural disturbance or the other, leading to people, from the laymen to the learned minds, go berserk. Despite sophisticated developments in modern technology, despite having highly organized disaster relief networks, vulnerability analysis mechanisms, and post disaster mitigation operations in order, the common man, like a helpless child can only patiently wait for the next hit.

  2. 2 Are Our Efforts Streamlined with the Providence?

A classic example of this is the Tsunami that hit the shores of Japan a few years ago.

    • It happened to be one of the most severe underwater earthquakes to hit a coastal country in world history. Japan is considered, by far, one of the most technologically astute countries in the world, at par with the United States and a few other European countries.
    • The statistics reveal that when one of the other countries was hit by a similar catastrophe, the technocrats sketched and brainstormed about their attempts to erect structures that could withstand earthquakes of magnitude touching 6-8 on the Richter scale.

However, as nature has its way to zip the technobabble of those who are crude in metaphysical matters, the country witnessed a quiver of an intensity exceeding what anyone could anticipate. But the most astonishing fact here is that the remote cause for this phenomenon happened to be connected to the lifestyle of the people.

Long before when the Indian subcontinent witnessed the violent tremor that hit Bhuj in the state of Gujarat claiming many lives, the epicenter was spotted to be in proximity to a massive animal-based food processing industry. The studies reveal it and the geologists admit that the immediate cause for such phenomena is not just some tectonic plate movements underneath the earth’s surface. There is something more subtle to it what anyone could comprehend. Einstein’s popular “pain wave theory” complements this fact, in toto.

  3. 3 Nature's Position Reconciled

Considering the version of the great wisdom of the yore, put it simply, any place where the fundamental principles of a sane life like non-violence, cleanliness, truthfulness, sanity, etc. are violated at large, nature takes its toll by bunching the masses together who have their karma due from their past lives by making a clean sweep just at the right moment. Hurricanes, tornadoes, cyclones, tsunamis, earthquakes, famines, droughts . . . the list is endless; because of the endlessly trying to succumb to accumulating more than required.

Of course, this is not to portray a picture of the material nature as a sort of cruel mindless annihilation machine. Nature is ultimately working under the direction of God. Therefore, a healthy perspective to accept this bitter reality is to consider these calamities to be like a wake-up call to alert us of the impending danger when people resort to a life devoid of spirituality.

To assimilate this fact becomes easier when we consider the lifestyle of people and the rule of Kings in ancient times. We have the shining examples of King Yudhishthira, Lord Rama, etc. Under the monarchial regime and with intrinsic-quality-oriented-work as the foundation, people strictly followed their religious codes and were committed in their duties toward their families, the King, the saints while being God-centered. We read the descriptions in the ancient texts, how the Kingdom of such kings used to be free from any epidemic with peace and prosperity enveloping the whole state. The clouds poured sufficiently, the oceans readily gave away pearls and valuable stones from its womb, the trees, and the forests joyfully shared their valuables in the form of fruits, vegetables, latex, medicines, herbs, honey, and so on.

  4. 4 Better Late Than Never

But as the times deteriorated through the ages and the people became more materially oriented, nature began to withdraw while revealing her other side. This might well be the reason as to why there are no recorded instances of such massive natural disasters in earlier centuries combined together as much as they are in the 21st century alone.

Therefore, before the unseen repercussions of the fateful “darkest hour” begin to manifest, let us strive to become a part of the solution by adopting spirituality, the most practical spiritual solution for all the material problems of today. For example, an apparently simple activity of calling out God’s names or meditating on His grace every day can have an unprecedented impact in revolutionizing the thought pattern of anyone who accepts it with sincerity and gratitude. Thus, when God and His divine instructions would become the center of people’s lives, it would lead to natural harmony and synchronization between the individual natures of the people and the material nature, organically leading to true peace and prosperity.

  5. 5 Conclusion

An example is always better than a precept! So, let us buckle up to play our part meticulously and let our actions speak louder than our words, to begin with.

Therefore, considering the above mentioned facts and using a healthy combination of scriptural statements, a historical/statistical analysis of the phenomena, and the latest relevant revelations from the scientific studies, we can personally comprehend this connection and also explain it in an amicable way to the receptive masses.
