A couple of days back I was doing an ultrasound examination of this 3-year-old boy. To my surprise, he was quite comfortable getting examined. Usually, I encounter a good hue and cry by young children while getting them examined. I wanted to know from the mother how she prepared the child to get himself examined so calmly. To my further surprise, It was the boy himself who was not afraid and chose to get his test done on his own.
But most of the children are scared to enter a clinic leave alone getting an ultrasound or lab test done.
The idea of any medical procedure can be scary for parents and children, especially when they don’t know what to expect. It is important to properly prepare the child for an appointment with a doctor.
Prior to the appointment, parents can communicate with the child about the process. Children are less anxious and cooperate better when they know what’s going to happen.
Children are fearless unless we put our fears into them.
Instead, explain to the child why he or she is going to a doctor and how it will help him or her in getting good health and relief from an ailment or a pain. Such communication can convert the visit to a doctor a pleasant experience for all involved, parents, child and the doctor.
God bless this brave boy and God bless our children with good health
